The story
An ancient Tamil heirloom red rice, historically gifted to bridegrooms — "mappillai" means "groom" — for the strength it lent before a wedding. The bran is left intact, giving each grain a deep red hue, an earthy nutty flavour, and a robust nutritional profile. Grown organically by Nazrani Farms on the coastal plains near Mahabalipuram, free of pesticides and chemical fertilisers.
- Soak 30 minutes; cooks in 35–40 minutes, 1:3 water
- Excellent for kanji, dosa batter, and steamed meals
- Rich in iron, fibre, and natural antioxidants
